Apache Hadoop was born out of the need for large web properties to process massive amounts of data. Now Hadoop is becoming the defacto platform for big data storage and processing in the enterprise. A modern Hadoop-based data platform is a combination of multiple open source projects brought together tested and integrated to create an enterprise-grade platform. In this session we review the Hadoop projects required in a Windows Hadoop platform and how it integrates with Microsoft SQL Server Database Platform analysis tools. We drill down into Hadoop integration and implementation on Windows and Windows Azure and integration with the SQL Server Data Platform.

Developers have a bewildering array of choice today – SQL, noSQL, key-value, document, and, by the way, there’s this Hadoop thing too. Windows Azure supports a variety of first and third party data storage and management options to provide the degree of choice developers expect. We’ll look at the data patterns and requirements of modern applications, then map these requirements to the capabilities of the various data management options offered in Azure. After this talk you will be able to make better architectural and implementation choices for your application.

We’re seeing a paradigm shift in database use, moving away from a one-size-fits-all model, and into a multi-database-for-multi-need model known as polyglot persistence. The main reason? Companies are discovering that traditional relational models for organizing data are not always an ideal fit for the challenges introduced by use cases the app challenges in today’s world of connect apps, such as deep level social network relationships or schema-less data ingested from heterogeneous sources. This session takes a look at two popular NoSQL variants for tackling these situations: documents and graphs. This demo-heavy session will explore the storage and searching highlights of MongoDB and Neo4j, their benefits when used side-by-side with SQL databases, and the options for running these powerful database engines in Windows Azure.

Cloud platforms are designed to handle high volumes of transactions and data by means of scaling out, and Windows Azure is no different. Understanding the limits of the scale units specific for each of the core platform services is critical for delivering robust solutions that, by design, avoid some common contention points in a scaled-out architecture. This session will first present the scale unit limits for Compute, Cache, Storage, and Database, and then share patterns and best practices derived from the implementation of some of the largest Windows Azure deployments world-wide. This session is mostly aimed at solution architects and developers who take active role in the A&D of the software they build.

Public facing websites for large organizations generally have very strict Service Level Agreements (SLA) for parameters related to Business Continuity Management (BCM) such as High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR). Such SLAs can't be met with just with HA capabilities of a SharePoint farm or 99.95% uptime offered by Azure Virtual Machines (VMs) using availability sets. In this session we will discuss how to meet such demands by implementing two SharePoint farms on two different Azure IAAS data centers (DC) in hot stand-by DR mode which can failover within minutes. We'll do a demo of the auto-failover feature on a live SharePoint environment and explain how we used combination of technologies, SQL Server Always On, Log shipping, Azure Blob storage, and Azure Traffic Manager (ATM) with some support from .NET and Windows Azure power shell to build the above solution.
